In addition to the action campaign in Washington for universal background checks, the Newtown Action Alliance also pushed for Starbucks to adjust its policy which allowed customers to carry firearms into Starbucks establishments. The alliance wrote a letter to the company’s CEO citing their concern that the policy undermines the safety and wellbeing of citizens.
The letter was formulated after gun advocates were set to hold a "Starbucks Appreciation Day" at an establishment in Newtown, Connecticut, to celebrate the ability to carry weapons in the store. The Starbucks location in Newtown closed before the event was scheduled to begin and on Tuesday, September 17, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz requested that the coffee chain's customers no longer bring firearms into Starbucks stores or outdoor seating areas - even in states where “open carry” is permitted.
