Spotlight on Independent Schools and Sexual Assault

The Boston Globe’s Spotlight team has published a number of stories highlighting New England private schools and the incidence of inappropriate contact with minors. Duby McDowell was a featured speaker as dozens of independent school administrators gathered in Wallingford, Connecticut to discuss how schools can “do better” around screening candidates, managing personnel and communicating with constituencies. The Connecticut Association of Independent Schools organized the conference and invited Duby to speak as she works with a number of member schools.  Determining the best way to interact with the news media, if at all, is a constant struggle for independent schools; Duby discussed strategies and tactics that can mitigate the fallout from unwanted media attention, and pointed out opportunities presented by the current shift towards transparency in the independent school world.
