MJC Honored to Stage Newtown One Year Anniversary at Washington National Cathedral

On the cusp of the one-year anniversary of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, The Newtown Foundation and Washington National Cathedral hosted a vigil service of mourning and remembrance for all who have fallen victim to gun violence in America.

The program began with the Cathedral’s Bourden Bell tolling for 3 minutes; each minute represented ten thousand of the approximately 30,000 lives lost to gun violence in the last year. The solemn service encompassed the themes of remembrance, resolve, hope and inspiration. Immediate family members of gun violence victims from across the country shared their stories as well as survivors impacted by gun violence who have become advocates.

Words and prayers were offered by interfaith clergy members from around the country, most who have been directly impacted by gun violence. The service incorporated songs by the World Children’s Choir and Carole King. The vigil concluded with a candle lighting by the entire Congregation.
