The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center (The Kate) recently received a $691,000 grant as part of a federal aid program aimed at rescuing cultural institutions hindered by the pandemic.
Funds from the “Shuttered Venue Operators Grant” will be of great help to The Kate, a longtime MCG client. As with most performing arts venues, the venue needs to recover from financial losses incurred during a 15-month shutdown, retain staff, and restart programs. The grant will also cover the cost of an upgrade to the theater’s HVAC system.
Senator Richard Blumenthal made a trip to Old Saybrook, Connecticut to personally congratulate The Kate and said all members of Connecticut’s congressional delegation helped champion the initiative. “Theaters are places where dreams are made,” Blumenthal said. “We need actors, playwrights, musicians, singers...”
