Zoom and similar platforms are now a permanent part of business life. We have become comfortable with it. Perhaps too comfortable. As in wearing pajamas to a business meeting, holding a pet on your lap, or finishing your breakfast while your colleagues talk about Q2 goals.
We’ve noticed and have some basic advice on keeping it professional.
Think about your background. Keep it neutral and non-distracting. If you have to, use a virtual background.
Adjust your camera angle. Straight on is best.
Think about lighting. If your Zoom room doesn’t have flattering natural light consider purchasing a ring light that can be positioned in front of you, but outside camera range to always give you a finished look.
Dress up - at least from the waist up. Pretend it’s a business meeting.
Kids and pets are cute, but keep them out of the picture.
Tray tables up. Eat before or after, but not on camera and not during a meeting.
No black screens. The point of a video conference call is simulating real life while not needing to be in the same geographic location. But it is important to be fully in the meeting. That means after you have taken steps one through six - turn on the camera and let everyone see the results.
Bottom Line: Only you can set standards. Elevating your video game raises your profile and protects your professional reputation.
