Historic Gun Safety Law

Former Senator George Jepsen.

McDowell Communications Group was honored to be part of an anniversary event at the state Capitol marking the 1993 passage of one of the nation’s first assault weapons bans.

Governor Lamont used the occasion to garner support for an updated anti-gun violence bill that was passed and signed into law just before the end of this year’s legislative session.

The new law includes provisions to prevent community gun violence, stop mass shootings, avoid firearm-related accidents, add protections for domestic violence victims, and avert suicides. The new law:

  • Bans the open carrying of guns in public.

  • Bans large capacity magazines.

  • Bans unregistered ghost guns.

  • Prevents the bulk purchase of handguns.

  • Requires safe storage

Among those in attendance at the 30th anniversary event were some of the lawmakers who helped make Connecticut a leader on gun safety, including:

Former State Senator George Jepsen

Former State Representative Mike Lawlor

State Representative Bob Godfrey

Senate President Pro Tem Marty Looney

Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz who was serving in the House in 1993.
