Midnight Oil Yet to Burn

The 2016 legislative session ended Wednesday at midnight with more of a whimper than a bang as lawmakers still need to pass a budget. MJC clients, however, scored impressive victories:

Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence spearheaded HB 5054, “An Act Protecting Victims of Domestic Violence.” The bill requires the subject of a temporary restraining order to turn over firearms to law enforcement until there’s a court hearing to determine if the temporary restraining order should be dismissed or become permanent. Governor Malloy has promised to sign the bill into law.

For the second year, Connecticut Automotive Retailers Association was instrumental in fighting off the “Tesla Loophole” bill. This was a reaffirmation of the state’s Franchise Laws that were established to protect consumers and locally owned small businesses. Connecticut’s car dealers provide more than 14,000 jobs and bring in $10 billion in tax revenue to the state; we are proud to support their efforts.

The Connecticut Institute for the 21st Century is gaining greater visibility with Connecticut policy-makers and the news media. A website redesign allows CT21 to reach a select audience of opinion leaders on important issues related to the Connecticut economy. As a result, CT21 is becoming a go-to source of nonpartisan, data-driven policy recommendations.

The Legislature is scheduled to go back into session on Thursday, May 12th to take up the state budget.
